Estate Planning and Probate: What You Need to Know

This seven-week course is designed to instruct and inform the student about important principles of estate planning and how to apply these important planning principles to one’s life. Each week the class will focus on the practical points of establishing a will or estate plan, how to deal with one’s own (or a relative’s) incapacity, the probate and administration of an estate, and the usefulness of trusts and how to, or if one should, avoid probate. Wills, Financial and Health Care Documents, Guardianships, the Probate Process, and much more will be covered!

Other related topics of discussion will include minimizing problems of estate planning and the avoidance of will contests and trust disputes. Common and unique examples of problems that arise in estate planning or probate will be presented both from the estates of rich/famous and from the attorney’s own practical experience.

The course is taught by attorney Robert S. Meyring, Emory Law ’03; attorney Meyring practices wills, trusts, incapacity, and estates law in Cobb County with a wills, trusts and probate law specialty practice, operating in Vinings since 2005. Robert is a 20-year member of the estate planning and probate section of the Atlanta Bar, a fiduciary section member of the Georgia State Bar, a frequent speaker to civic and church groups, a 10+ year volunteer attorney at the Fulton County Probate Court, and a regular instructor of Trusts & Estates courses for seniors at the First United Methodist Church of Marietta. Attorney Meyring is licensed to practice in all Georgia courts including all U.S. District Courts and the U.S. Supreme Court. Attorney Meyring is an accomplished litigator in the Georgia Probate Courts and Superior Courts and in the resolution of matters related to Estates, Guardianships and Trusts. Robert follows in the footsteps of his grandfather, Arthur W. Meyring (d. 1981), a 53-year practicing attorney.

The course is lectured in a plainspoken, conversational style with Q&A taken during each lesson. The instructor is a former high school teacher and Peace Corps volunteer who finds much enjoyment in sharing his knowledge through volunteer teaching to students who can use the course lessons for personal benefit, and who want to feel better and be more knowledgeable about their estate plan.
